Things to do in Santo Domingo
Between your trips to Agora Mall and other nearby shopping destinations, take time to visit these top attractions:
Catedral Primada de América – Christopher Columbus’ son, Diego, began construction on this cathedral in 1514. Years later, the pirate Sir Francis Drake and his crew resided in the basilica and pillaged the interior upon their departure. However, the building still stands with its vaulted ceilings, Romanesque arches and 14 stunning chapels about seven kilometers from the hotel.
Parque Nacional Los Tres Ojos – Created by earthquake tremors, sinkholes caused this park’s cave to collapse in three areas that became underground lagoons resembling eyes, or ojos. Three lagoons—Aguas Azufradas, La Nevera and Las Damas—can be explored by descending into the cave, and a fourth, Los Zaramagullones, can be found outside. Because of its location, Los Zaramagullones is not considered one of the “eyes,” but it is the largest and deepest of the lagoons.
Alcázar de Colón – Take a self-guided tour through the palace of Diego Columbus, son of Christopher Columbus. Located about seven kilometers from the hotel, this reconstructed mansion features about 20 rooms and is filled with 16th-century antiques and artwork by Diego.
