Things to do in Colonia del Sacramento
Situated beside the mighty Rio de la Plata just across from Buenos Aires, the city of Colonia del Sacramento is a peaceful retreat with beautiful beaches, parks and river promenades. Founded in 1680 as a Portuguese colony, the city practically breathes history. Don’t miss these popular attractions:
Barrio Histórico – Your trip back through time starts after a seven-minute walk from our hotel’s front door. Colonia’s historic district offers pedestrian-friendly cobblestone streets, 17th-century architecture, and several quaint shops and restaurants. Highlights of the old city include La Calle de los Suspiros (Street of Sighs) and the Puerta de la Ciudadela, an enormous stone gate complete with a drawbridge.
Basílica del Santísimo Sacrament – Just four blocks away, this parish church was originally established in 1680 with the current building constructed in 1810. It has undergone several restorations over the centuries, including one to repair damage done by lightning. The basilica reflects the unadorned simplicity of its historic roots, though it also houses many interesting works of sacred art.
El Faro de Colonia – Only a 10-minute walk from the hotel, this historic lighthouse was built in 1857 and still functions today. Climb the 118 steps for panoramic views of the city and the expansive Rio de la Plata.
